Programmes
Chile 21 Foundation also counts on different programs, which are oriented on research topics relevant to our country. The thematic areas that the Foundation works are:
Bicentenary School Generation: Geared towards the formation of new political leaders to be inserted in political life with knowledge and skills inspired from a vision of the progressive world. Approximately 500 youth have gone through this program. Many of them are now incorporated in relevant tasks of decision making in the state apparatus.
Economics: In charge of the economist and former minister in that area, Jorge Leiva. Its purpose is the reflection and debate on issues concerning the country’s economic progress, with the emphasis on the design of a new development strategy, innovation and productivity, employment policies, etc. During these years, it has developed activities and publications in the areas of macro politics, employment, economic regulation, development, innovation and technology, and worker protection.
Politics: In charge of the political scientist and executive director of the Foundation, Maria de los Angeles Fernandez, this program aims to analyze the policy reform initiatives in progress from a progressive perspective. Special emphasis is given to the strengthening of political parties, electoral reform, civic participation and the relationship between money and politics, among other topics. Since 2009, it is actively involved in initiatives related to the reform of the State.
International: In charge of the journalist Marcelo Contreras, the international area addresses the study of cross-cutting areas such as studies in Latin America, South America and issues related to our neighbour countries. Starting from those, the program works topics such as international politics, international economics, regional policy and neighbour issues. This has also developed in a network of Progressive Centres of the Southern Cone, composed of four regional centres: Perseu Abramo Foundation, Brazil, Centre of Politics, Economics and Social Studies – CEPES-Argentina, Liber Seregni Foundation, Uruguay and Chile 21 Foundation. This network aims to generate discussion and debate as well as convergent reflective discourse about possible characteristics of progressive governments in the region. This reflection is in development under the project “Progressive Consensus” which is supported by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The Network has developed, for four consecutive years, the so called Annual Forum of progressivism, with support of the foundation mentioned above, Jean Jaures Foundation and Pablo Iglesias Foundation.
Social Protection: After an intense work in this area by the former executive director of the Chile 21, Clarisa Hardy, this program has focused its work on issues related to pension reform and employment.
Cross-cutting areas
Gender: Foundation Chile 21 has generated an interesting work in this area as a result of the personal commitment of its two chief executives, Clarisa Hardy and Maria de los Angeles Fernandez. Recently the program has been developing public proposals for greater public involvement of women into public sphere and proposals for improving women’s political participation at the level of political leadership, with the main emphasis on positioning the program in the media.
Environment: In charge of Hernán Durán, this program is geared to the implementation of workshops with the goal to sensibilize the public opinion about environmental issues, such as the debate on climate change, abatement strategies, new environmental institutions and non-conventional renewable energies (ERNC).
